Holiday Card Photos in Dallas: When to Book (and Why September Fills First)

Every year I get the same email in the second week of November. Someone needs family photos for a holiday card, the card needs to be ordered by the end of the month, and every good weekend is already gone.

So here is the timeline nobody hands you.

The dates that actually matter

Shoot in late September or October. That is when the light in North Texas gets good and the trees finally turn. Shoot much earlier and everything is still summer-green and 95 degrees. Much later and you are gambling on weather.

Order cards in early November. Most printers want ten to fourteen days, and that is before you have addressed a single envelope.

Mail by the first week of December. Anything after that and your card arrives in a stack of them.

Work backward and you land on booking now. Which is why September weekends go first, usually to people who booked in August.

What thirty minutes actually looks like

A mini session is short on purpose. That is the point, especially with small kids, whose good mood has a shorter runway than any of us want to admit.

We meet at golden hour. I get a few frames of all of you together in the first ten minutes, while everyone is still fresh and before anyone has been asked to smile one too many times. Then I mostly get out of the way and let your family be a family — walking, talking, picking someone up, arguing about whose turn it is. That is where the picture you actually keep comes from.

You leave with more than enough for a card, and a handful you did not expect to love.

What to wear, briefly

One person in a real colour, everyone else in something quiet. That is the whole formula and it works against Texas autumn every time.

Avoid big logos, neon, and tiny busy patterns — they fight the background and date the photo. I wrote a longer version of this in what to wear for fall family photos if you want the detail.

Where we shoot

For fall colour I lean on White Rock Lake and Prather Park. If you would rather stay home and let the kids be in their own space, an in-home session makes a warmer card than most people expect.

Fall mini sessions are $375 — 30 minutes, golden hour, 15+ hand-edited images, delivered in time to order cards. Dates are limited and the good weekends go first.
