Fall is peak family-photo season in Dallas–Fort Worth, and the number-one question I get is: what do we wear? Good news — it’s simpler than you think. The goal isn’t matchy-matchy; it’s a palette that feels like your family and lets your connection be the focus. Here’s how I’d approach it.
Start With a Palette, Not an Outfit
Pick two or three colors that work together and build around them. For a Texas fall, warm, earthy tones photograph beautifully — rust, camel, olive, cream, deep denim, burgundy, muted mustard. Nobody needs to wear the exact same color; everyone just dresses within the palette.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Matching head-to-toe reads dated. Instead, mix complementary tones and let each person’s outfit feel natural to them. If Dad’s in a denim shirt and camel pants, Mom might wear a rust or cream flowing dress, and the kids pull colors from both.
Layers & Texture Are Your Friends
Texture adds depth — knit sweaters, denim, corduroy, suede, a soft scarf. Layers also help when DFW weather can’t decide what season it is (often). Bonus: they give little hands something to fidget with that isn’t you.

What to Skip
Leave the large logos, bright neons, and busy character prints at home — they pull the eye and date the photos. Ultra-trendy pieces can feel dated in a year, while classic, soft, and simple ages well.
When to Book Fall Sessions
Fall books up fast in Dallas — the best golden-hour weekends in October and November go first. If you want fall-family or holiday-card photos, reach out in late summer to lock your date. Every family I work with gets a full what-to-wear guide once we book, so you’re never guessing.
