What to Wear to Your Dallas Engagement Session (Without Overthinking It)

You just got engaged. The ring is on. The texts have been sent. The group chat exploded.

And now someone — your mom, your best friend, Pinterest at 2 AM — is asking what you’re going to wear for your engagement photos.

Deep breath.

This is supposed to be fun. And I’ve photographed hundreds of couples across Dallas, so let me tell you what actually matters — and what doesn’t matter at all.

Wear What Makes You Feel Like You

I’m going to say something that might surprise you: I don’t care what you wear.

What I care about is how you feel in it.

The couple who shows up in jeans and sneakers and can’t stop laughing at each other? Those photos are magic. The couple in designer everything who spent three hours getting ready and now can’t relax? Those photos feel stiff.

Your outfit is a frame. Your connection is the art.

So before you spiral into Pinterest boards and influencer guides, ask yourself one question: “Do I feel like myself in this?” If the answer is yes, you’re good.

The Two-Outfit Strategy

That said — I always recommend bringing two looks. Not because one is “better,” but because variety gives your gallery range.

Look 1: The Comfortable You

This is who you are on a Saturday. Jeans, a great pair of boots, a shirt you actually own. Something you’d wear to brunch in Deep Ellum or a walk around White Rock Lake.

This outfit works best for the beginning of the session, when we’re still warming up and finding your rhythm together. Comfort equals natural. Natural equals timeless.

Look 2: The Elevated You

This is date night. A dress that moves. A blazer with a clean tee underneath. Something you’d wear to a rooftop dinner at The Joule.

We usually save this for golden hour — when the light gets soft and cinematic, and everything looks like it belongs in a film.

Colors That Actually Work on Camera

Here’s what I’ve learned after 20 years behind the lens:

Go with: Earth tones, muted jewel tones, soft neutrals. Think sage, burgundy, navy, cream, rust, dusty blue. These photograph beautifully in every DFW location — from downtown brick walls to open fields.

Coordinate, don’t match. You’re a couple, not a uniform. If one person wears navy, the other might wear cream or blush. Complementary, not identical.

Skip: Neon anything. Busy patterns that pull the eye away from your faces. Logos. All-black everything (it loses detail and texture on camera). All-white everything (save that for the wedding day).

The Thing Every Couple Forgets

Shoes.

I’m serious. You’re going to be standing, walking, leaning, sitting on the ground. If you show up in brand-new heels you’ve never worn before, you’re going to spend the whole session thinking about your feet instead of each other.

Wear shoes you can move in. Bring the heels for a few standing shots if you want, but have a comfortable pair ready for the rest.

And while we’re at it — skip the smartwatch. Remove the Fitbit. Tuck the sunglasses into your bag. These tiny details show up in close-ups and they pull you out of the moment.

The Real Secret

The best-dressed couples at my sessions aren’t the ones who spent the most money. They’re the ones who feel confident. Relaxed. Present.

That’s what I’m photographing. Not your outfit. Your connection.

So pick something that makes you feel like yourself on your best day. Show up. Hold each other. I’ll handle the rest.
